(1) Thursday, January 8, 2015: We will meet from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM in the upstairs private room at the Moonstruck East Restaurant, located at 449 Third Avenue at the Southeast corner of East 31st Street, New York, NY 10016-6026 click here for map ].

The title of this event is "Children's Rights and Our Obligations to Future Generations".

Our guest speaker for this evening's chapter meeting is Seyn Laproyen, political philosopher, philosopher of art, theoretical scientist, and visual artist.

Seyn Laproyen (photo).Seyn tells us that it is undeniable that most members of our species do far more for our children than any other species, at least in terms of how much time is spend for their raising and further support in life. Sadly, for our times, it is also undeniable that our species is the number one culprit that is busy "fouling" our planet for countless living organisms, certainly including our children and future generations. Our speaker would like to invite all interested parties to come up with ideas to make sure that a) we do even more for our children and b) we cause far less harm to our children and our environment. In the form of proposals, Mr. Laproyen will offer an uncompromisingly global outlook on this subject.

Seyn Laproyen was born and raised in Ankara, Turkey, and has also lived in Istanbul. He learned English in his teenage years and has an interest in philosophy that dates back to his high school years. He traveled to Western Europe in the summer of 1983, visiting Paris and London, and came to the U.S. in the summer of 1988. His interest in children's rights form an indispensable part of his political outlook and he has chosen to remain child-free and has never regretted that decision.

Please note that because this meeting is being held in a restaurant, food and adult beverage of your choice will be available for purchase. To allow our speaker to be uninterrupted, let's do food service early, say until 7:15 or so. Because we must vacate the room at 9:00 PM, we can always eat later, downstairs. Some of us will always stay late. We can't stop sharing our Humanist Philosophy. Hoping to see you at the meeting!

Admission to this event is free, but annual HSMNY chapter membership ($25.00 singles / $35.00 couples) is encouraged.

For questions, call Beth Lamont or e-mail HSMNY Executive Director Stephen James.

You can RSVP (optional, but recommended) through Facebook or Meetup.

New York Society for Ethical Culture (logo). We are always faced with ethical dilemmas regarding freedom of information, justice and violence, etc. In responding to the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo in Paris, we Humanists have much to say and that's why we wish to get together first, for this important purpose: for communication among ourselves and perhaps a proper plan of response. The NYSEC event will afford no opportunity for discussion or input from the audience as there's already a chosen panel discussion.

The NYSEC event, which will be held in the Auditorium, is described as follows:

Come Celebrate Darwin Day with Us!

Golden Unicorn Restaurant.Dear friends of the HSMNY who usually meet at the Moonstruck East Restaurant, we hear there's more Winter Weather coming, but we're still hoping to see all of our old friends, as well as new ones, as we join the Secular Humanist Society of New York at the Golden Unicorn Restaurant for a Darwin Day Celebration! Let's consider sharing Darwin Day with as many of our Humanist Friends as possible, including the Secular Humanist Society of New York. Let's US Celebrate with THEM!

Photo of Charles Darwin. It's Time to Celebrate the Evolution of the Human Race! Are We Humans Still Evolving? What a question, when there's not much evidence of this hoped-for phenomenon these days! But the optimistic outlook is that technology for connecting with other Peace People around the world might eventually work in our favor! Let's hope?

It's the 206th birthday of Charles Darwin and the 27th Anniversary of the birth of the SHSNY. Abraham Lincoln was also born on this same day in 1809. Please see the the attached PDF file for a celebratory poem by Beth Lamont.
